En el año 1980, dos neurofisiólogos italianos descubrieron de forma fortuita éstas neuronas, que se encuentran en el área de Broca, área relacionada con el lenguaje y en la corteza parietal inferior que es una zona vinculada con la planificación de los movimientos.
¿Cual es su función?.
Desde el nacimiento permiten a los bebes imitar los movimientos de los adultos e ir aprendiendo. Son la base de la capacidad innata de imitación, sin la cual el aprendizaje sería prácticamente imposible. También nos sirven para realizar y simular acciones antes de llevarlas a cabo.
Pero una de las funciones más interesantes de las neuronas espejo consiste en permitir comprender lo que piensan los otros. Son útiles para inferir las intenciones y pensamientos de los otras personas.
La simulación de las neuronas espejo no se limita al plano motor, sino que incluye las emociones y las sensaciones de los demás. Se ha apreciado que algunas zonas del cerebro vinculadas a las emociones se estimulan de igual manera si somos nosotros quienes las experimentamos, como si vemos a otras personas vivenciándolas. Desde ésta perspectiva pues, las neuronas espejo también nos permitirán ser empáticos, ponernos en el lugar del otro y sentir lo que el otro siente. Constituyen la base neurológica de la empatía y de la compasión.
